When starting our unit on community and community jobs, we decided to change our dramatic play to The Police Station. It has been a big hit with the kids! We have been doing, art, writing and science centres to help support our inquiry learning. In art we have been learning about finger printing. We used ink pads to create fingerprints, so we can add them to our files in our police station. Fingerprints tell us "if you are a good guy or a bad guy" (Ainsley). We have been making pictures by using only our fingerprints. We have also been making badges. In writing students have been writing "wanted" and "missing" ads to place in our Police Station. Students had to describe their object/person using descriptive words, expanding their language. In science we had a crime scene! Someone stole our plant! Using our detective skills and the clues left in the classroom we found out it was the principal, who took our plant!
Before the Winter Break we started an inquiry on snow and winter. It has since continued into January, where we have had multiple opportunities to explore snow and ice. One of the first explorations was bringing the snow and ice into the classroom. Students had to guess how many days it would take to melt. During this time, students were able to touch and feel the ice and snow, in order to make better predictions. Another experiment that we did was the reaction of rock salt on ice. Students again made predictions and got to see what happened first hand! They noticed the rock salt making holes, and we added dye to see where the holes were. The last experiment we did was to see if salt and ice would cause a piece of string to stick to ice. They got to explore this both indoors and outside.
In the classroom, we have been making and decorating snowman, matching and sorting snowflakes, and talking about winter activities in both French and English. In French we have started writing journals, where students are to pick a topic of their choice and write a sentence in French. A lot of children have been writing about winter. They have been doing quite well! Winter is certainly not over and neither is this inquiry. Stayed tuned for more winter fun. |
