In outdoor education we gave the students in opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of birds by getting them to work together to build a bird nest. First we got them to collect dry materials, such as grass and leaves. We then split them into groups. One group was in charge of the construction and laying out the dry pieces into a nest shape. The second group was in charge of making the mud. When both groups completed their tasks, they worked together to build their nest. It was not as good as a 'real' bird nest, but other children on the yard thought it was really cool!
For an introduction to science we decided to have a little fun with eggs around the weeks of Easter! We started with a raw egg in vinegar the Thursday before the long weekend to see what would happen when we got back. Some of their observations listed were: " The outer shell came off " , " It got bigger", " It's squishy", "It's slimy". We then decided to test to see how durable it was if we dropped it from different heights. We found out it was bouncy, but that we couldn't bounce it more than the height of the container. When we dropped the egg and it burst and the membrane separated from the yolk and egg white. The kids commented on the smell and texture when given the chance to touch it. We then decided to do the experiment again while we were present, to compare the amount of days it would take to loose it's shell. Our first conclusion was it took six days, our second conclusion was it took 3 days. We then recorded our observations once again and took our experiment further using the same egg that was in the vinegar and placed it in corn syrup, then in dyed water. We also took a separate raw egg and observed what happened to it when placed in salt water. Music and movement is a big part of the kindergarten curriculum. It allows students to explore and express themselves in a new way. We love to experiment with a variety of different musical instruments. We have used shakers, bells, drums and boomwhackers (picture above - tubes you hit on the ground that make different sounds). We recently made our own instruments to explore music. We talk about loud and soft sounds, fast and slow, low and high sounds and more recently we have been talking about beat and rhythm. We learn different songs to help incorporate and explore the curriculum. We like to make up different dance moves to songs! It's lots of fun!
