We investigated the basic properties of sound. We conducted many experiments to show that sound travels, that sound can be absorbed or reflected., that sound has pitch and volume, and their is a relationship between vibrations and sound.
Our class had a great time learning about the winter Olympics. We kept track of every Canadian medal won and we cheered loud and proud for Canada! We made a mural of some of the events with our faces as the Olympians... We created skiers and snowboarders! Our hallway was lined with Olympic torches. We made Olympic "sports cards". And updated our graph of Olympic medals daily.
We have been investigating the basic properties of light. Light can reflect: Light can refract: Light is made up of many colours: When light shines on an opaque object, it creates a shadow. We created aluminum people and their shadows as an art lesson.
We have just completed our Social Studies unit on Canada. We have learned quite a bit about provinces and territories. We have created posters or brochures to inform others about what kind of resources, industries, job opportunities, climate, population etc. are found in each province or territory. The students who participated in the ski and WOW club had an AMAZING time. We had 3 beautiful days filled with fun and laughter. Most were overheard saying "This is the best day ever!", "It's so much fun!", "It's awesome!" I think that buying their lunch at the canteen was the highlight of their day. The students persevered even when it was tough and challenging. I am so proud of them! Each student received 10 green pipe cleaners and were asked to build a standing coniferous tree. Many different styles were created!
The kids sure do LOVE a challenge. I gave each group of 2 one large sheet of construction paper and one arm length of tape. The challenge was to make the longest chain that they could. The results were amazing! The group with the longest chain was Anika and Katie (the dark blue chain). Well done girls!
Since we are studying Canada in social studies, I thought it would be a great idea to integrate our learning into the Arts. We talked about arctic art and Canadian artist Ted Harrison. The students were ask to create bold pieces of art including arctic animals, people, landscapes, and symbols. They started by sketching a horizon line and adding either a sun or a moon in the sky. They were encouraged to use a mix of jagged, curved, and smooth lines as they separated the ground and the sky into many sections. Next, they coloured in their images using bold, bright colours. They were asked to use warm colours for the sky and cool colours for the ground or water.
