Our habitat Science unit has come to an end. We used scientific inquiry and research skills to create and present a diorama of a Canadian animal's habitat. We investigated the ways in which plants and animals in a community depend on features of their habitat to meet important needs (water, food, shelter, space). We identified our animals as either herbivores, omnivores, or carnivores. We even discovered specific adaptations that allow plants and animals to survive in specific habitats.

What a fantastic day we had at Baxter Centre! The first activity we played was a "Prey and Predator" game. We were divided into herbivores, omnivores and carnivores. We even had a "disease", a "natural disaster", and a "hunter". We learned how animals survive in their habitats and the skills of a predator. At first the students (animals), ran around and were screaming. They quickly realized that predators can easily find them by following the sounds. They became more quiet, crouched and hid behind trees and bushes, and did not all hang out together in one spot!
In the afternoon we used technology, the outdoors, and physical activity together. We got an introduction to GPS technology and how it can be used along with a compass in navigation to find a specific area. During our outdoor physical education, we decided to go for a walk. Skyler and Hannah noticed that along the edge of the forest, there was a lot of garbage. They asked if they would be able to clean up the mess to help keep our community and the animal habitats clean. So the whole class participated in the yard clean up. We decided to make it girls against the boys to see who could collect the most garbage. The bags were about equal in the amount collected, but the boys bag was definitely heavier in the end.
On Friday September 29th, our school participated in the Terry Fox walk/run. Our class goal was to raise $100, then it quickly changed to $200 when we surpassed the one hundred dollar mark. Our class raised $295!!! Way over our goal! Thank you to everyone for helping us raise all of that money to help find a cure for cancer. Our class was also the one who brought in the most amount of money in the whole school. We got to lead the event by starting off the walk! I am so proud of my Grade 4's. Way to go! Most of the students in our class LOVE gym time. They keep telling me that it's their "most favorite subject!" We are working on always playing co-cooperatively and for fun. Some days we play a specific game in the gym, and other times we have outdoor gym and they can choose an activity of their choice. For one of our art lessons, we went outside, to examine up close, trees and their bark. We felt the tree trunk's texture, and noticed that they are very rough (not smooth), and that they have many different colours mixed together. Tree trunks are not completely brown........actually most are not even brown! We saw yellow, green, brown, black, white, gray all mixed together in one tree! We used pastels to create the tree's textures and colours.
We had fun getting to know each other and our classroom this week! We constantly sit beside new people with our "flexible seating" and we played some team building games in order to share our thoughts and ideas with others. One game was to build a solo cup tower with 6 solo cups, one elastic, and some string.....without touching the cups with our hands! The other game was to build the tallest tower of straws using 15 straws and one foot of tape. Not letting it fall over was the difficult part! In science we worked with a partner to list the things we knew about habitats, and things we would like to learn about.
Our Dramatic Play area was turned into a submarine. We had fun painting an underwater mural, making fish and starfish for decorations, putting pieces of piping together to make a periscope, pretending we were diving underwater, and especially wearing the goggles! |
